Updos and Buns 2010 Dolce and Gabbana

June 12, 2010

Dolce and Gabbana’s choice for a fashion hairstyle is a quick and negligee updo. Put your hair up make a little twist, tuck and pin and you’re finished. Too much messing or aiming for perfection is going to give you the prom look we’re trying to avoid. Unless, of course, you really are going to the prom, but that’s a different subject. Decorate your updo with accessories. The more accessories you put in your hair, the better. You can chose between hair combs, hair pins, hair-clasps and tiaras.

Beach Hairstyles

June 10, 2010

Summer is coming and it’s beach time. We all know that salt water and sun are damaging our hair. Use scalp and hair UV protection products. The best beach hairstyle is the pony tail at the back or on the side of your head. You can also leave your hair falling loose on your shoulders. Wet effect is very suitable for long wavy hair. If your hair is wavy, apply volumizing cream, tousling your hair as you go. If your hair is straight, add some texturizing cream, rubbing it into the scalp and moving down the hair. Apply the texturizing ream so that your hair gets a bit of a “chunky” look. You can put a hair band or tiara.

Prom Hairstyles

May 1, 2010

If you are getting ready for the prom night and want to do you hair yourself, here are some tips. If you prefer the classy updo prom or formal hairstyle, you need medium to long length hair. You will also need some ponytail holders, gel, and long pins. The trick to getting your updo to look its best is to use several of these pins in different directions to hold your hair in place. Don’t rely on too much hair gel as this just makes your hair stiff. You want your hair to be able to withstand the humidity, but also to be touchable by your boyfriend.

If your choice of a hairstyle is the loose curls, here is what you must know: the looser and bigger the curls, the cuter you will look. First, pull your hair up, use some baby powder to add fullness and then tease your hair.

Other looks are more classic, like the French Twist. You have to slick back your hair with gel. Part it on the side and pull the hair down. You may need the help of a hair rat. No, not a real rat. You can get this at a beauty supply store. It will help you pull your hair down if you have real smooth hair. You will still need lots of long pins.

Starting with just straight hair, you can use large curlers to get those nice big curls. Once you have them, you can position them in place on top of your head, towards the back. You don’t want your hairstyle to make your face look too long, unless you have a round face, and then it will help balance your geometry.

You can use shine serum to give you that sleek sophisticated look. Be sure to use plenty of pins, flexible hairspray, not the max hold kind, and gel if you need it.

Experimentation before prom will be the key. Use what works best for your hair. Find some pictures on the web; try it out with these ides using the pins, gel, and hairspray.

French Twist Prom Updo Hairstyle

April 30, 2010

French twist is classics among all formal and prom hairstyles.

The classic French twist is elegant and sleek, perfect for special occasions like weddings and black-tie parties. The modern French twist, a flirty modification of the classic, is good for cocktail parties, work or a night out.

The French twist is great for prom, weddings or any formal occasion

For the classic twist, you might substitute small hair combs for pins. Move the comb in the direction of the twist, snagging a small portion of the roll just before you pass over it. Lift the comb 180 degrees and then push gently into the roll and hide it in the groove.

These days ladies are taking a more relaxed approach to the French twist.

Types of Hair Products and How to Use Them

April 29, 2010

Hair wax

Hair wax is a thick hairstyling product containing wax, used to assist with holding the hair. It does not harden like products such as hair gel, but remains pliable. Hair wax has been used for many years. In fact, a waxy soap-like substance was invented by the ancient Gauls as a hair styling agent and was not used as a cleaning agent until many years later. Hair wax is currently experiencing an increase in popularity, with many manufacturers releasing versions, referred to as pomade, putty, glue, whip, and styling paste.

Hair mousse

Hair mousse is a toiletry added to hair for extra volume and shine. It often comes in either spray or cream form. It adds volume without any clumps or buildup.

Apply to hair when hair is damp, not dry. Apply all around and comb hair afterwords to make sure that the mousse is evenly spread. It’s usually used for long hair.

Pomade

Pomade (also called pomatum) is a greasy or waxy substance that is used to style hair. Pomade makes hair look slick and shiny. Unlike hair spray and hair gel, pomade does not dry and often takes several washes to remove – a special shampoo, though, may be used. Other de-greasers include olive oil, dish washing liquid and lemon juice. Most pomades contain petroleum jelly (and in fact petroleum jelly can be used alone as a pomade) and mineral oil, and many also contain some sort of wax. They may also contain perfume and coloring agents. A plethora of pomades are still in production today and vary in factors such as weight, shine and scent. The stiffest will have a higher proportion of beeswax while the lightest may have a higher proportion of oils.

Hair gel

Hair gel is the most popular hairstyling product that is used to stiffen hair into a particular hairstyle. The results it produces are usually similar to but stronger than those of hair spray and weaker than those of hair glue or hair wax. It’s very appropriate for short hairstyles.

Hair spray

Hair spray (also hair lacquer, spritz, or sticky water) is a common hair solution that is used to keep hair stiff or in a certain style. Weaker than hair gel, hair wax, or glue, it is sprayed to hold styles for a long period. Using a pump or aerosol spray nozzle, it sprays evenly over the hair. May leave hair feeling “crunchy” unless brushed out. Hair spray was first developed and manufactured in 1948 by Chase Products Company, based in Broadview, Illinois.

Some hair sprays use natural polymers and solvents like vegetable gums dissolved in alcohol. One popular ingredient is gum Arabic is made from the sap of certain trees that grow in the Sudan. Gum tragacanth is another herbal gum that is used to stiffen calico and crepe, as well as hair.

Hair Volumizer

Hair volumizers are used to temporarily add volume, body and shine to thin or flat hair. Hair volumizers are also used by balding men to make their hair mass look dense. They come in many forms like shampoos, conditioners, sprays, pomades and lotions.

Hair volumizers contains humectants which work by attracting moisture from the surrounding areas to the hair strand, thereby swelling the hair and making it look thicker. Various polymers present in the volumizer, coat the hair strand making it look thicker and shiny.

Shampoo and conditioner forms of the volumizers are used just like ordinary shampoo or conditioners. The spray and lotion form of volumizers are used in damp hair, near the roots of the hair; the person flips her/his head downwards and gradually blow dries the hair, with the air being blown along the shaft of the hair; once hair are dry the person can flip his/her head up.
