Prada Fairy Bag

March 27, 2008

I’m loving this new Prada Fairy Bag from their spring collection, you might of seen it in the new Prada spring/summer ‘08 campaign featuring Sasha Pivovarova. This beauty features a fairy art print by James Jean in grainy calf leather. The bag is available in in two sizes, the smaller version retails for $2290 and the larger for $2490. They’re sold out online, but you can try your luck on the waiting list (if it’s not already closed) for these at the Prada store. I think this bag is quite cute but I’m trying to stay away from bags that can be dated quickly and just go for the classics. I wonder which celeb will rock it first?

Fashion Hippie Trends

March 26, 2008

Those who know me, even in the professional world soon come to discover that, I am a hippie at heart. I am a complete product of my upbringing. Think: Marin County, 1965, hot tubs, peacock feathers, daughter of a Psychiatrist…My parents brought me to the first “Buman Be In”; I spent time at the Escalen Institute in Big Sur when they were still holding “encounter groups; and yes, I was into the Grateful Dead too… in fact, jam band music is still where my heart lies and I spend summers at music festivals.

So when I see all of this ethnic, batik, tribal, patchwork and tye-dye in high fashion, I am totally in my element. The only trouble remains that in my day-to-day professional meetings, a full blast of this look won’t work. But per my usual thing, I always add a bit of funk with accessories. I have fabulous ethnic jewelry that I wear with even the simplest outfits. Great handbags or shoes with ethnic details add that bit of ethnicity when I need to look polished otherwise.

Let’s face it, the best place to fully wear this tribal look (unless you are on the runways) is at the beach. St Tropez maybe?

Elie Saab Haute Couture

March 20, 2008

You may not recognise the name Elie Saab, but you’re sure to have seen his creations on the red carpet. Commissions have been been pouring in since he dressed Queen Rania of Jordan for her coronation, and Halle Berry for the Oscars in both 2002 and 2003.

Selling 1000 couture dresses and 200 wedding dresses a year, and with more than a dozen clients visiting his salon to place orders during Haute Couture Fashion Week alone, this is a designer who is on the up.

At Saab, the loud colour palettes and extravagant use of sequins so beloved by his fellow Lebanese designers, have been ditched in favour of a more Parisian refinement.

Spring Makeup Trends 08

This spring the makeup trend is all about color – brilliant, vivid and strong.

Eyes have impact and anything goes.
The look is bold and playful – very similar to the 60’s and 80’s.

Bright eyes with lots of color, washes of metallic, glitter and smokey black eyes.
Eye makeup colors range from bright, bold colors to pastels – blues, greens, yellows, oranges, pinks and purples.

Makeup Tips for Eyes:
For smokey eyes – check-out my post, “How To Get Smokey Eyes This Spring”.The key to pulling off color, is to blend well.
Use a soft-haired brush to blend powder eye shadows.

Try combining eye shadow colors – yellow/orange, blue/green, teal/black.
Or for the more brave; yellow/blue, orange/pink.

Play with color – try using yellow on your eye lid and orange as your contouring color with blue eyeliner.
Or blue on your lids and green under the eyes.
Experiment with color combinations this season.

PINK is the color to paint your cheeks this spring, whether it’s a delicate pastel or an eye-popping bright.

Cheeks have a rosy glow to complement springs flawless skin. The look is a fresh flush.

Skin this spring is clean and simple – no bronzer or contouring.

The skin’s texture is more matte then too shiny.

For a bit of shine highlights are added to the cheeks, temples and nose – then blended well to create a sheen to the skin – leaving a fresh glow.

Eye brows are groomed and well definite.

For lips this season make the color bold and the texture matte – the matte texture will keep it looking modern.
Lip stains work well for this look

Use colors like tomato red, claret, orange or fuchsia.
If you can’t give up your lip gloss, choose colors that are highly pigmented and bright.

Makeup Tip for Lips:
Bold lip color looks best on defined lips.
Outline your lip shape first with a lip pencil (in the same shade), before filling in with lip color.

Spring makeup trends for 08 are fun and daring. Use this season to express yourself!

Yves Saint Laurent Preppy Shoes

New Trendy Shoes

YSL Preppy Shoes in Navy and Gold Patent

The name says it all: preppy as can be. Although I lean towards funk most often, I can definitely appreciate prep for a fun alternative. Notice the really straight golden heel and the shark tooth edges? That detail makes this shoe stand out from all the other “penny loafer” types.

Not to mention the patent leather, very edgy for the typical prepster. I would pair these with skinny blue jeans and a cute navy sport coat,so fashionable. It could be worn perfectly with Marc Jacobs or Burberry, so cute, so stylish, it’s a must have of the season.

Dior. Christian Dior Haute Couture Collection 08

March 6, 2008

CHRISTIAN DIOR COUTURE SEDUCTION

John Singer Sargent’s infamous portrait of society beauty Madame X was the starting point for John Galliano’s Haute Couture at Christian Dior, but how would the modern muse step out? Black mounds of velvet and chiffon drapes and jet beading hung from cavernous ceilings, while inky dyed water rippled in the pyramid shaped pools the set snaked around. Even before the first look came onto the runway the scene was dipped in decadence. From behind a swoosh of black tulle the first creature glided out: gold thimble hat, glitter blinking eyes, green silk boule embroidered jacket, kimono sleeves, tiny waist, exaggerated hips and skirt nipped in at the knee.

Dior Haute Couture Fashion

Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love blazed over the loudspeakers and Sixties rock anthems wailed out riffs while a Technicolour treat of ruffles and virtuoso twists of satins, taffetas and lavish embroidery sauntered past on the world’s highest heels. It screamed luxe, luxe, luxe! Galliano’s fashion seductresses wafted from mythical to iconic, bold, gold, and glorious. This was the ultimate rock goddess, posing and preening in the world’s most expensive clothes to Jimi Hendrix and The Guess Who’s American Woman.

Dior Haute Couture Fashion

This was the ultimate party siren with oversized Byzantine earrings, hot shades, canary yellows, buttercup sequins, bright fuschia petal skirts and each look more extravagant than the last. Rose twists of fabric draped hems of wild A-line dresses or pulled on heavy satin gowns that were dragged round the floor. Madame X was wild, notorious, beyond… And only briefly upstaged by Galliano, a mix of Holbein and Henry VIII with gilt gold locks, who took his turn to a standing ovation.

DIOR. Paris Fashion Week Dior Collection Fall/Winter 08

Over the weekend Paris Fashion Week began for another season as the last major fashion week for Autumn/Winter ‘08. Paris is often the most exciting of the fashion capitals has it presents some of the biggest names including Chanel, Stella McCartney and Christian Dior. Dior is one of the first major players to show, it’s always exciting to see what amazing designs John Galliano creates.

Today Galliano took inspiration from Barbie dolls producing a show of models with big hair, dramatic make-up and pretty party dresses. The collection drew from a varied palette of mainly bright shades, there was plenty of golden embellishment on head bands and sleeve cuffs. There were ’70s style leather suits teamed with wide-rim hats and matching gloves. What do you think of the collection? Is it too much?

What happened with Valentino without Valentino Garavani

March 1, 2008

The first collection without the famous Valentino shown on the Paris Fashion Week 08

It’s weird seeing a Valentino collection unveiled without the man with the dark tan, Valentino Garavani. Since his retirement, this was the first fashion set out on stage. Designer Alessandra Facchinetti unveiled the Valentino Fall 08 collection in Paris with new twists and turns.

“I think the things Valentino created were timeless,” she said. “I wanted to take something from the cleanliness of the sixties structure, but at the same time make things soft and bright. But there is nothing too obvious.”

Some trends featured in the collection included deep folds on the sleeves, skirts and dresses with petaled necklines and abstract garlands of flowers. It’s a good start for the young Italian designer, but she definitely has some big shoes to fill. The fashion house will change the style or not..

Yves Saint Laurent Fashion Show- Paris Fashion Week 08

With identical short, black, fringed bobs hiding their eyes and dark plum staining their lips, the Yves Saint Laurent models marched through the bright, white, modernist tent in the Grand Palais to a hyper-techno beat with a precision that matched the impeccable and passionate tailoring of their clothes.
Stefano Pilati’s new look for YSL:

There was just one look for each – “I’ve learnt not to try and show every single thing,” said creative director, Stefano Pilati – and not a single handbag on show. “Everyone knows we do bags, why clutter?”

This autumn/winter 08/09 was a master class in tradition and tomorrow’s new world of fashion.

“It’s more intriguing if the link is more abstract, no?” said Pilati. “I wanted to define the silhouette with new shapes that were slightly out of balance.”

This meant vaguely 18th century cutaways and military gilets in khaki cashmere with fine Donegal tweed trousers and sculpted black leather spencers with chocolate cashmere zoave pants; a wide-sleeved top in tweed bisected with black cashmere, with a slim tweed skirt or a similarly-cut shift in the same duality of fabric.

A romantic, billowing-sleeved, white organza blouse came with a more disciplined, slim skirt in a black, new velvet flock fabrication; a sleeveless, bright yellow cocktail dress with wide, rounded A-line skirt in a revived couture silk intersected with a half-moon of the black velvet at the midriff. A cool, pale steel top in the same silk featured a two-tone skirt, the top half black, the lower, the matching grey.

Lapels were deep and rounded, waists cinched with belts which were corset-laced behind and many of the shorter jackets featured a slightly raised peplum at the back, the better to show off the waist.

A cream cashmere, deep-V-necked, hip-length jacket was tightly belted, its hem appliquéd with black geometric motifs, inspired by the artist, Joseph Arbels, while hint-of-Cossack tunics, with off-centre buttoning, were belted over double-layer, asymmetric skirts which fell in deep folds, both in walnut-brown cashmere.

The palette of browns, greys, creams and black, was only occasionally disturbed by a sunburst of yellow, a flash of turquoise and the unexpected jolt of sky-blue on the soles of the high, black patent and suede boots.

A studded choker, a necklet of turquoise and brass and a five-inch brass cuff with rows of chiseled holes, whispered of the souk in Marrakkesh – but that was the only jewellery. Fashion week ysl

YSL Paris Fashion WeekYSL Paris Fashion Week

Earlier this week saw the opening in Paris of the first in a worldwide chain of refurbished YSL boutiques.

The historic Saint Sulpice store, on the Left Bank, inspiration for Saint Laurent’s original Rive Gauche line of luxury ready-to-wear, which first opened its doors in 1979, has been remodeled with a new interpretation by Pilati, in consultation with the architects Moatti + Rivière.

The concept is taken from the YSL perfume, Opium, and includes shiny lacquered surfaces, polished brass and stone and parquet flooring.
